RETURN

Wednesday, July 10th Parent drivers should plan to be there in the morning (more details to follow once we are there).  We believe that the only thing we need to do in the morning is get the kids packed up and checked out of the dorm rooms, but that itself takes some time.

Parent Drivers: If you have volunteered to drive, please make sure that Coach Hanlon or the APWA has sent you gas money.

Meals while at Camp:  All meals are included in the cost of the camp.  All they can eat is breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Things to bring:

  • Workout gear: shorts and t-shirts, socks, and underwear (no sweats or hoodies needed)

It is very hot in the field house where they will practice and wrestle; they will probably completely soak their workout gear during each session.  Plan on 2 sets of workout gear per day.  The after-dinner session is just two dual meets so they will just need to have a dry shirt and shorts, plus a singlet if they have one.

  • Singlets: one is fine, but 2 or more would allow them to wash one in the sink and hang it to dry while they wear the other.  Note: they do not need singlets; they can get by with shorts and a T-shirt.
  • Snacks for the dorm room.  Their last meal is at 6 pm and then they will have two dual meetings before bed.  They might get hungry and need a snack before bed.
  • Towels:  one is good, but two would be better.
  • Bedding (sheets, blanket(s), pillows).  They will each have their own dorm mattress, but nothing else.  A sleeping bag would be okay as well.
  • Water Bottle
  • As a personal fan, the dorm rooms are “air conditioned,” but I don’t remember them being particularly cool.  A small fan that they can put next to their bed might make sleeping more comfortable.
  • Plugs:  if they have lots of things to plug in and charge at night, it might be a good idea to pack a small power strip and/or an extension cord.
  • Trash can liners: Most of their clothes will be soaked with sweat and smelly.  If you give them a heavy-duty garbage bag to stuff their dirty clothes in, it might make everyone’s return drive more pleasant.
  • Cash: all meals are included but there is a campus store where the kids can buy Bucknell gear.  We also try to take a trip to an ice cream shop on one of the days.  We will also stop on the drive down and back and they may want to buy food or a drink.

Sample Daily Schedule to assist with packing (the first day will not have the morning session, and the last day is most likely a couple of individual matches) and then checking out:

7:00 am–8:00 am: breakfast
8:30am–9:30am: Technique Session #1
9:30am–11:00am: Dual Meet #1

11:30am–12:30pm: Lunch
1:30pm–2:30pm: Technique Session #2
2:30pm–4:00pm: Dual Meet #2

5:15pm–6:00pm: Dinner
6:30 p.m.–9:00 : Dual Meets #2 and #3
9:00 p.m.–10:45 , Free Time/Camp Store

2023-2024 Youth Wrestling - Junior Warriors

Our youth wrestling season will start on Tuesday, December 5th and continue every Tuesday and Thursday until March 9th.  This program is for boys and girls of all experience levels in grades K-6.

All practices will be held at the Curby Training Center in Troy.  Each practice will be with Joe Uccellini and Lenny Baker.  Coach Uccellini is the Team USA U15 National Coach and the 2022 Masters Greco Roman Nation Champion.  Coach Baker is an NCAA National Champion from Brockport University.

Practices will run from 5 PM to 6 PM. The kids will be divided by grade into two separate groups, grades K-2 and grades 3-6. Practice will focus on two areas: wrestling technique and wrestling fitness.

Optional Competitions:  During the season there will be several Saturdays where your wrestler will have the opportunity to apply the skills they have learned.  These will be “Friendly” tournaments held at the Curby Training Center.  These are fun events without the stress and intensity of a typical youth tournament.  The optional competitions are held on various Saturdays during the season and will be announced once the season starts. These events are optional and typically cost $10 per event.

The cost for this season will be $300.  This includes the facility use fees, USA Wrestling insurance cards for each wrestler, coach licensing and background check fees and a custom-sublimated shirt with each wrestler’s name on the back.  Altogether there will be 28 individual instruction sessions plus the optional competitions that a coach will attend.

Discounts are given for multiple family members (50% off for any additional family members).  I you are experiencing financial difficulties, please reach out to Jamie Hanlon (518-258-0019).

The season ends with an exciting youth tournament held at Averill Park High School.  This year our tournament, called the “Interstate Youth Wrestling Challenge,” will be held on Saturday, March 9th.   That same day we also host an Open/Old-Timers tournament, so if any of you want to dust off the old wrestling shoes and compete, have at it!  The following day is our high school Freestyle & Greco Roman Tournament.  The tournament weekend is one of our biggest fundraisers and we will need your help to volunteer your time.  As the event approaches, we will be reaching out for any help you can provide.
